K-12 Language Program

Extended Foreign Language (EFL)

The EFL program offers a "school within a school" approach to world language education. Its goal is to provide students with the opportunity to become proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in both English and an additional language. At the elementary level, the program is designed for a group of students at each grade level who, after participating for one school year, continue into the next grade level—ultimately creating a K–5 continuum.

All schools implementing Extended Foreign Language (EFL) programs are required to provide a minimum of 300 minutes per week of instruction in the target world language, focused on language arts, reading, and writing. This instructional time may be partially integrated into content areas such as mathematics, science, or social studies.
