K-12 Language Programs
Bilingual School Organization (BISO)
BISO schools implement a school-wide dual language program model designed for students who are particularly interested in developing bilingual and biliterate proficiency in English and one other language. These schools follow an instructional schedule in which 60% of the day is devoted to instruction in or through English, and 40% is dedicated to instruction in or through the partner language.
Instructional time across subject areas follows the norms established for all elementary schools, with the addition of 60 minutes daily for language arts in the partner language. Curriculum content is delivered in both languages.
At the upper academy level in K–8 centers, and in middle schools, students take language and literature courses in their language of choice, along with an additional Humanities course taught in the partner language.
Time requirements (Required):
- 300 minutes per week of instruction in language arts/reading/writing in the target world language
- Additional instruction in two core subject areas in the target world language
